- Listen to encounter, not just to accumulate: Jesus said to the religious teachers of the day, “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life” (John 5: 39). The scholars read the Bible to gather data about God, not to receive Him.
- Listen no matter how you feel: It is when we don’t feel like listening that we should seek out His word the most. In the word, we discover God’s goodness, faithfulness, and unfailing love (Psalm 37:3, 48:9, 34:8) May you taste and see His comfort and peace.
- Don’t try to understand everything all at once: Jesus said to his disciples, “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear” (John 16:12). Take your doubts and questions to God. They will be answered when you are ready.
- Take notes and meditate: God’s word is like a seed sown into our hearts nurtured with water (meditation and prayer) and light (obedience), bearing the fruit of love.
